Updated CDC Requirements for Pets Travelling
from Canada to the US

As of August 2024, there have been several changes to the requirement of travelling with your dog to the USA by air and land (and returning to Canada):

Generally,

  • The dog owner or guardian needs to complete the new online CDC Dog Import Form for each dog that will travelling. This form is valid for 6 months, as long as the dog does not visit any high-risk countries during that 6-month period or originated from a high risk country and has not been in Canada for 6 months.
  • The dog(s) must appear to be healthy upon arrival when clearing customs.
  • The dog(s) must be at least 6 months of age when entering the US.
  • The dog(s) must have a microchip that can be read with a universal scanner for identification.
  • Rabies vaccination certificate generally is required.

An Important Note About Rabies:

For dogs travelling from low-risk countries (like Canada), there is no longer any requirement for proof of rabies vaccination. However, dogs returning to Canada from the US must still show proof of current rabies vaccination, so you need to make sure your dog’s immunization will not expire while you are in the USA.
