We have good news for pet parents looking to travel over the border from Canada this summer! The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has relaxed many of its restrictions on pets travelling from Canada to the United States.
As of August 1st, 2024, the following are required:
- The dog owner or guardian needs to complete the new online CDC Dog Import Form for each dog that will be travelling. This form is valid for 6 months, as long as the dog does not visit any high-risk countries during that 6-month period.
- The dog(s) must appear to be healthy upon arrival to the US.
- The dog(s) must be at least 6 months of age when entering the US.
- The dog(s) must have a microchip that can be read with a universal scanner for identification.
An Important Note About Rabies:
For dogs travelling from low-risk countries (like Canada), there is no longer any requirement for proof of rabies vaccination. However, dogs returning to Canada from the US must still show proof of current rabies vaccination.
