Spays and Neuters
Neutering dogs and cats involves surgically removing their reproductive organs. Doing so eliminates the risk of unwanted pregnancies that invariably find puppies & kittens in over-populated shelters. It also helps cats and dogs live longer, healthier, and arguably happier lives. How so?
Spaying female dogs laparoscopically reduces the risk of breast and uterine cancer. It also prevents potentially fatal uterine infections (pyometra) that are relatively common in intact females. Once spayed, a female is free of oh-so-messy heat cycles (periods) that bring on bouts of low energy, clingy behavior, aggression towards male dogs, and persistent genital licking. Our spays are done laparoscopically to minimize pain and promote a quicker return to normal activity.
Neutering males avoids testicular cancer and significantly reduces the risk of prostate cancer. It also reduces unwanted behaviors such as aggression, urine marking (smelly spraying in the case of male cats), and humping.
When is the right time to spay or neuter?
That depends on several factors, including the size and lifestyle of your pet. Our veterinarians will discuss those factors with you to help decide on a date based on what’s the best age to neuter a male dog or the best age to spay a female dog.
“I had a fantastic experience at Southeast Oakville Veterinary Hospital and highly recommend them. Their staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and provided personalized care for my pup. The facilities are brand new and has a modern look. It’s also impeccably clean. During my pup’s neuter, they even used red light therapy for his recovery, which we thought was really cool tech. The vets took the time to walk me through the process and answered all my questions in detail. Follow-up care was also excellent. Overall, I’m very impressed and grateful for the exceptional care my dog received at this clinic! Will definitely be coming back for my other pets.”
